McMinville, OR

I'm closing the month of architecture with this SR - 51, probably the most magnificent jet airplane ever built. It was used for reconnaissance for several decades by the CIA etc. It is now retired, and this one is in the same museum with the Spruce Goose.

Impressive beast. There was often one detached in the UK.

To this day one of most impressive achievements of American engineering and to think it was design using slide rules. Also the CIA version was designated the YA-12 and this Air Force version was designated the RS-71 but when Lyndon Johnson announced it's existence in a political battle with Barry Goldwater he called it the SR-71. Instead of correcting the president,, according to the book Skunk Works by Ben Rich, they were required to change the name to the SR-71 which also entailed changing all blue prints etcetera at the tax payers expense. I do like this aircraft. Cheers, Ron

Sweet plane. Too bad they aren't used anymore. Looks great with all the glass squares behind it. Well shot!
