Interesting that the semi-sheer pinch-pleated curtain, swag-tied below, covers but not completely. On both window sides, exposed panes of glass have opacity, suggesting that the curtain's function is to moderate and soften the evening strongest light rather than conceal. A deepening shadow that crosswise transverses the window, one-third of the way down, darkening the lower part of the curtain and more so the clenched tie, adds an element of mystery to a scene darkly framed yet limned with inner borders of brightest light. Hence, the patterns of light and dark initially seem random, a play on chiaroscuro, an intriguing play.
