Michael, I only observed the last hour or so of the roadblock, after I was convinced of the futility of attempting to sleep (besides earlier, when I walked over to chat with the MADD representatives, when it was more of a party atmosphere over there. Nothing was really "happening" yet, probably waiting until their "customers" began to arrive later). During that time, I didn't see a single person arrested. Between 1:30 and 2:30 AM, they performed field sobriety checks on only two individuals. The second was a large fellow who had a definite balance problem (the white car near the end of the gallery). He was "windmilling" his arms during the heel-to-toe - just like the classic drunk - but I suppose he wasn't really inebriated, because they let him go. The other person was an attractive woman that had no problem with the heel-to-toe, despite the handicap presented by her high - heeled shoes. I just wonder why they made her go through it? ;) The literature I linked above makes a case that these sobriety checks are just publicity stunts, and they divert law enforcement officers from other duties where they could be much more effective. These roadblocks only harass social drinkers. They are advertised in advance, and the real dangerous drunks avoid them. There is indeed a noise ordinance. But it was ignored. Hey, private citizens are just the unimportant "little people," after all. Thanks very much for your comments.

I think you were right to complain....I'm sure they could have set up the roadblock away from a residential neighboorhood. I hope they did catch anyone who was driving under the influence as they should have their license taken away. I'm not going to get into all the political stuff, but the basic premise of your complaint..having a portable generator roaring all night outside your house is a bit more than you need to endure. Aren't there noise laws in your city? I'm sure there are and a generator would constitute a violation.

Shame on you for your whining. If they help save one persons life that night it was worth it. You were made aware of it, so you could have made other arrangements. Quit your whining like a baby and grow up.

Local Police Department had a loud diesel generator going behind my house, to power the klieg lights. We couldn't sleep. It was LOUD! I was told that "It was for the better good" and that it was "advertised in the paper" and that it would "only would be until 2 AM (It wasn't!)" And, if the noise was objectionable "maybe I should have gone somewhere else tonight." This is my home. Go somewhere else, to get a night of peace and quiet, on a holiday weekend? I asked the MADD person (It's the woman in the bright orange coat, see the car), after a long conversation, who she voted for in the last election (expecting a reply along the lines of that it was none of my business). She said that she "was too busy to vote in the election." End of conversation (because someone listening to the conversation immediately spirited her away).
