Looking North, standing on South Street (where previous photos were taken).
There were originally over a hundred houses visible here. A school originally occupied the foreground.
They were purchased and demolished by the government (so now are gone).
Most of the houses were demolished in the 1980s (over 20 years after the fire started).
Originally, the cost to extinguish the fire was estimated in the low 10s of thousands of dollars.
However, because of inaction and finger pointing, the fire burned deeper and deeper until the cost
to extinguish it (over 600 million dollars in 1983) was much more than the "value" of the village. :(
The distant, yellow-roofed structure is the town municipal building / firehouse (apparently still in operation).
