pittsburgh - "the day the earth stood still"

klaatu barada nikto!

see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_the_Earth_Stood_Still

the Civic Arena (now called the mellon arena) does resemble the spaceship...

"Biznessmen" are seeking to demolish this amazing (retractable roof that opens in less than 3 minutes),
historic building to erect bland office buildings and build yet another pork-barrel sports arena.
It is and has been, for over 40 years, an important Pittsburgh landmark.

See: http://www.post-gazette.com/localnews/20020507arena0507p2.asp
and: http://www.post-gazette.com/forum/letters/20020522lets0522p1.asp

and a desultory article: http://www.post-gazette.com/localnews/20020513arena0513p2.asp

The "wind" argument of the last article is just specious BS.
Being inside with the roof retracted (and seeing it happen) is a marvelous event.
The writer even goes on to invoke the history of the Hill District (behind the Arena).
As if office buildings would be a nicer thing to see, blocking the view! Not!
