This photo of a black fly was done during research on Mectizan, Merck's antiparasitic
drug that helps to prevent River Blindness. The drug is administered free of charge
through the WHO to tribes in Africa. The black fly is a vector, carrying the parasitic
worms that cause the disease. This photo was made with a scanning stage and slit lamps.
the lamps create a thin plane of light that paints the image onto filn as the subject is
pushed through via the moving stage. It's done in total darkness with an open shutter.
