We have been visited by Karenia Brevis.
K Brevis is not a long lost friend. It is an insidious killer commonly called red tide.
Red tide is killing fish and sea bottom creatures (crabs, sponges, mollusks) and sea turtles who feed on them. Manatees have also been found dead in areas of high red tide counts. While lethal to marine life this outrageous organism causes only minor respiratory irratation in humans. But over time minor irratation can become a major health issue.
Areas of red tide are too large to contain, control, or kill. As with all delicate balances in nature, we must be careful not to introduce harmful substances to the sea in an effort to overcome this natural red menace.
So we wait and watch. |
