Telemarketers
I rarely get irratated. But a few things can get me steamed.
One thing is a stranger calling my home trying to sell me something.
Today, twice, I used a technique I learned from one of those forwarded emails
(which is another thing that works me up - but that's another story).
Anyway, this email contained ideas for handling telemarketers
as suggested by Andy Rooney, an American TV curmudgeon.
Rooney suggests using five magic words, "Hold on a minute, please".
You then put the phone down and continue whatever you were doing.
In a little while you will hear the rapid beeps as
your phone signals that it is connected to a dead line.

It works like a charm.
The first call it took about 3 minutes before I heard the beeps.
The second caller must have really believed in her product.
She hung on the line for nearly EIGHT minutes!

I've been getting pre-recorded solicitations on my cellphone
from mortgage companies from time to time.
The recordings feature a blocked number so there's no
way to see who it is.
Talk about aggravating!

I'm not as patient as you Dave........I simply say that I am not interested and I hang up on them. I'm not going to give them the opportunity of tying up my phone for eight minutes.......but most of the time I simply do not answer the phone and let the answering machine pick it up. Then I call someone back when I want to.

I like how the red light is on indicating the line is open . . .

I like the way you did this picture out of the frame like that. Excellent job. The sad thing about telemarketers is that they're somebody trying to make a living. But the sadder thing is that sometimes people are sucked into some awful things, it's best to ignore them somehow that's for sure. Evenutally they probably get out and get a real job. ;>)

If I'm in a really foul mood I'll play along, maybe 5 minutes, get them all excited.
Then I'll ask for their home phone number and get as rude a possible. Then I ask to speak to a supervisor, and demand they remove me from the list. By law they have to.

I love this technique and have used it as well. What frosted my hide was a call I got from my bank, who left a message that they were giving me a "curtousy call." When I got the message, I thought for sure I'd bounced a check or something. I had to call them back THREE times before i could get the person who had called me, who then said, "Oh no, we just wanted to see if everything was alright and whether there were any services you wish to add." I said, "You call this a CURTOUSY call, when you're not being curteous (I'm butchering that spelling!), when I do NOT want to be soliticited, and when, as a grown up, I'm quite capable of calling you if I want something more???" She never did get it. Grrrr....I hate these calls.

Kicker? Same lady called me a month later, same deal. And, she had no memory of our earlier conversation. I finally said, if you don't take me off that list, and stop with these courtesy calls, I will close my account. Haven't gotten another one! :-)

LOL at Scott!!!!

Way to go....I am on the do not call list...but they still call me? So now I have caller ID!

Sounds fun. I often try to turn the tables on them too... I have tried to sell them my work, told them Scott was dead, shared the gospel (this usually gets the quickest hangup) or just act like I'm completely insane (not really much of a stretch). Yours sounds much easier!

I am on the National List but they've found a way to beat that. They are now hiring telemarketers in Canada.

Thanks for the link Doug.
However, we are already registered on the National Do Not Call List.
The culprits are companies we have done business with.
Various departments of our bank, BoA, are big offenders.
They feel they are exempt from the tenets of the list.

Thanks for the tip. The next time I get a call like this, I'll do exactly that. Gerat close up shot.

Great idea! I belong to that Do Not Call List and it works!
Doug Kessler03-Aug-2006 00:40
What a great idea. Aren't you on the national "Do not call " list?
We haven't gotten one call since signing up.

If no one responds immediately after I say hello, I hang up
I may try your method too
