June 23, 2006

In my wanderings yesterday, I found myself looking at sticker prices on automobiles.
My venerable Jeep is still running strong, but it is nearly 14 years old.
Replacement parts are starting to cost more than the vehicle is worth.

I figured it out. If I were to replace the Jeep with a low mileage hybrid car, after factoring
in the price of a new car, it could take 12 to 15 years before I would financially break-even.

Of course there are other reasons
other than the cost of fuel to drive a fuel efficient vehicle.
But whenever I do move away from the Jeep I will probably buy a...
...WAIT A MINUTE. That is tomorrow's Picture A Day.

Meanwhile, do you have a guess as to what I would drive after the Jeep is gone?

Excellent SP. Fuel economy is becoming an issue, but as you point out the time it takes to break even can take longer than some imagine. Still... If I was shopping for a new car today I'd be looking for something that could burn E85. A clean burning diesel would be nice, too....

34 city mpg? I only get 30 highway with my four cylinder. I really need AWD so my fantasy car is a new Suburu. Love your reflection SP in this. There's nothing like a new car. :)

I bet it won't be long before we see your new car. This is a cool shot with you as part of the image. Nice work, I like it.

'bout doubles my fuel mileage. I'd still rather have no note :) The math is still upside down on most hybrids. That will change with competition and improved technology.

Great shot David.
I think you will first buy a Canon 30D, and then get a Mazda Miata! ;-)
