January 31, 2006

We got tired of waiting for the right weather for us leave the Intra-Coastal Waterway (ICW) for the Atlantic Ocean.
So we decided to take the ICW, with bridges and heavy boat traffic, from Lake Worth down to Ft. Lauderdale.

The trip was 50 statute miles.
We had to open 20 bridges which served roadways that crossed the ICW.
That made for a long day.

In the photo above, Shibumi is following two cruising trawlers, 'Sanderlin' and 'Ankers Away' through one of the bridges.
I don't remember which one, of the 20, this was.

Nice shot, but I can imagine how much of a pain it is to traverse these bridges!!

Does seem like it would take some of the fun out of it. However, it made for a great photo. Love the drawbridge up in the air and the boats going through.

What a trip! Does it frustrate you having to motor all this way? This is somewhat tediuos, too, I imagine.

This gives me a good feel for what it must be like. And my gosh, stormy skies!

Al, travel down the ICW is free. All tax-dollar subsidized.
The state of Florida does a good job of maintaining the waterway
with the help of national funding.
Many other states along the U.S. Atlantic Coast do not maintain
the waterway as well.
In those states many boaters talk of heavy shoaling,
meaning the bottom ,beneath the surface of the water, is very shallow.
The ICW in Florida is dredged (dug-out) fairly often.
They have to, hurricanes fill in parts of it at times.

Nice shot, bet the bridge operators get tired.
Do you have to pay to navigate this ICW.?
