| We passed Melbourne Florida about 2 1/2 hours after departing Cocoa. This a shot of what used to be a marina that was wiped out by Hurricane Francis. I would have to look in my logbook to rember its name. During our first trip south aboard Shibumi I had quite the learning experience at that marina. The wind was blowing from the north. The kid on the marina radio assigned us an easterly faciing slip that was immediately adjacent to the westerly facing marina enterance; meaning I would have to make a very hard turn to reverse course while missing boats tied to the fuel dock at the end of the entrance. Have I lossed you so far? Anyway, we wound up getting blown all over the marina before I gave up and asked for another slip. The marina gladly obliqued and assigned us a must easier slip to approach, but not before we put on a grand show for all of the patrons in the fancy restaurant that overlooked the marina. The only casuality, other than my ego, was a cracked navigation light lens on Shibumi's port side, that I tapped against a pylon during the fiasco. I bought and installed a new light the next day. That was the last time we ever stopped in Melbourne. |
