26-FEB-2009

It was prefectly calm when we left the house this morning. We had to use the dinghy to get to Shibumi because we moved her away from the dock yesterday to avoid this morning's low tide.

Within an half hour of our departure this morning we sighted our first dolphin. It was having breakfast beneath the Hammock Dunes Bridge. We always consider dolphin to be a good omen. So we felt seeing this one so early in our voyage was a wonderful thing.

The breeze picked up some as we motor-sailed from Ormond Beach to Daytona Beach. It got chilly enough for us to close three of the panels on the cockpit curtains.
Leaving Daytona Beach, I took Shibumi off of auto-pilot to hand steer because of some unusal traffic in the area. I nearly ran the ship aground by straying out of the channel while studying the navigation chart too intently. It was a good reminder for me that I don't have my sea legs (or brain) yet this trip.
We anchored at Rockhouse Creek near Ponce Inlet before 3 in the afternoon. There were two other ships anchored in the small creek, so we took our time setting the hook in a current that was running opposite to the wind. This is a great spot to settle in for the night.
