September 17, 2008 II

The two flights from where we live in Florida to Beijing, China went like a fine tuned time-piece;which came as a relief after our rocky early morning start.

Well... maybe the airline food wasn't very fine-tuned. But on a long flight you get hungry and almost anything looks good.
Ever since we started planning this trip many friends have asked, “Which way will you go, east or west?”. My answer was, “I don’t know.” Our actual route was neither east nor west. The United Airlines Boeing 777 departed Washington, DC and turned northbound. We flew just east of the North Pole, between the pole and Greenland.

Above is my feable attempt to photograph the North Pole.

From the Arctic Circle we swooped south (everything is south from the North Pole) over Russia, then into China to land in Beijing.

Chicken or Pasta? I have crossed the Atlantic almost 50 times, and I am under the impression that every time was Chicken or Pasta :-)

Google Earth's "path" tool will show your Great Circle route with a distance of about 6,923 miles airport to airport. You were about 8-degrees south of the Pole on the Alaska side. Cool.
