After fighting thru crowds at farecard machines who were buying tickets for tomorrow, I'm on the Metro to DC Monday night |
In front of Greg's apartment, the traffic buzzes by |
 7 a.m. inauguration day outside Greg's window |
Free coffee at a local bank (see Claudia?) |
Just enough not overwhelming military/police presence |
See the big crowds there -- we skirted on the periphery once we figured we couldn't cross the parade route |
There were very large crowds/lines at the parade check in areas (down that street) |
Greg and Claudia right after Claudia decided her feet wouldn't hold out for the long run, so she went back to the apt |
Local NBC reporter Pat Collins who was VERY nice!! |
Here's how they blocked the streets -- two buses parked across all lanes |
Herds of people all walking the same direction |
Heading West to get past the White House |
 Marching west....... |
There were bicycle valet areas where you could check in your bike -- GREAT plan that worked well! |
Yikes -- we turned around and saw all these people behind us!! |
This is looking north so you can see how many blocks they've closed off to traffic! |
People looking down this street and thinking Wow that's a lot of people down there, let's keep going to the next street |
More examples of how they blocked off streets |
The police presence where we walked was just enough to make you comfortable |
There was a plane circling high enough up to make a contrail |
Yikes -- we've finally arrived! Well sort of.... |
We're on the West side of the Washington Monument near the Lincoln Memorial |
As you crest the rise, the first thing you see.....are the phalanxes of potties |
View up to the Lincoln Memorial |
And the view to the left |
Did I mention it was cold?? The reflecting pool was frozen! |
Greg in front of the nice, um, view |
View from the Lincoln Memorial back to the Washington Monument |
Look way in the back at the thousands and thousands of people still streaming down the street towards the mall! |
Watching the jumbotrons at the WWII Memorial |
 Yikes people!! |
This side of the Washington Monument was windy and cold......so we ended up staying here since there was room to walk around |
 Speakers and other logistics |
Yikes even more people are coming!! |
My fave photo -- I'm wearing Greg's fur hat |
This helecopter circled the Washington Monument most of the day |
Can you see the jumbotron?? This is where we stood for the swearing in |
View back to the thousands of people watching the same jumbotron |
In the background on the Elipse the parade participants are getting organized; see the White House? |
These guys had Obama cutouts they pose you next to for photos |
Yayyyyyyyyy everyone cheered when people they liked appeared on the jumbotron! |
And they said "Boooo" when Bush appeared - then laughed because it was such a shared emotion |
These folks behind me were listening to the same radio |
And he's sworn in!! Obama is the new president! |
 Wahooooooooooooooo!! |
We walked up closer to the monument to hear the speech |
Everyone was FREEZING but listened closely! |
Okay, speech is over, we've cheered, it is so cold, we are outta here!! |
Make a break for it! |
We tried to go around the south side of the monument since going north took us closer to the impassible parade route |
and that's when we were able to kind of see the millions of people between the monument and the capitol! |
And looking back at the monument from the south |
 People!! |
 Cold happy people |
Really cold really happy people |
We got on a little hill so you can see the people in the background |
And look way back there at the crowds on the Mall |
Ah tranquility.... Did I mention it was cold??? The Tidal Basin was frozen |
Here comes Bush in the helicopter next to the monument! |
 Good Bye!!!! |
So we crossed by the WWII Memorial again and tried to go back the way we came |
But they made us go up Virginia Avenue to 23rd Street |
And suddenly there were more and more people around us!! |
This photo is funny in so many ways |
The sea of people in front of us |
And the sea behind us |
So strange to see these streets I've worked around for years empty of cars and full of people |
Everyone knew they would have to walk a long distance, so they walked briskly in the cold, but at a steady pace |
Yikes, see all those people down there!? |
The Northbound flow was stopped to let an ambulance go by....... |
Then they turned them loose!! |
See how many people bicycled in!! |
View down 16th Street to the back of the parade viewing stand by the White House |
This part was very Twilight Zone -- streets blocked off and lighter crowds walking |
Mass Ave, 13th St, H St, NY Ave intersection |
Nearly back to Greg's apartment -- about 10.5 miles round trip!! |
Supporting the local vendors!! It was a GREAT day!! |
