What fun! We arrived in Nova Scotia and rented a PT Cruiser! |
This is the south shore of NS; the big rocks were deposited by glaciers |
There were boggy parts to walk across; see the ocean ahead of us? |
In the distance is the lighthouse at Peggy's Cove; a beautiful, sunny, warm day!! |
We just couldn't get over the views! |
At Peggy's Cove; the restaurant is great; and Keith's Beer! |
Memorial for TWA flight 111 that crashed into the waters just offshore |
The site is really stirring; they've done a great job creating a moving memorial |
And looking at the lighthouse at Peggy's Cove from the other direction |
Canadian Legion halls were everywhere!! |
The famous churches at Mahone Bay |
Our first Inn in Lunnenberg; You entered one floor with a kitchenette, dining table, and couch; upstairs to the bedroom! |
Memorial to various wars in Lunnenburg |
The biggest gazebo / band stand I have ever seen in my life!! |
This church actually burned in 2003 and was rebuilt! Looks like a frosted cake! |
Another church door; nearly all the churches were wood frame; very quaint |
 More church steeples |
The academy in Lunnenburg; you can see it on top of the hill as you drive into town -- wow! |
Dinner overlooking the waterfront! A bit chilly but the view was great! |
 Cute boat! |
 Bluenose! All wood! |
The next morning, there were guys hanging on both masts scraping them! |
The harbor in the evening! |
The harbor view from our room the next morning; the colors were so crisp! |
 Breathtaking view! |
We walked around Lunnenburg; this is a bank with the coolest rotunda right in the middle of it! |
Loads of beautiful wooden houses! |
For the duration of the honeymoon we ate whatever we wanted -- and only gained about 2 lbs each!! |
There were also Masonic Temples in every town and burg! |
We took this great little tiny ferry across whatever river this is! |
On the ferry enjoying the view |
Chug chug chug; the ferry followed a cable across the river |
Enjoying the view some more |
They have these floating dock pieces stacked on another dock; inside are all these little crustacians! |
We had a coffee and a nummy here! |
 A dock |
 Enjoying the scenery! |
Beautiful craggy shores, rounded rocks, lots of fir trees |
Near Crescent Beach (just on the other side); this side was warm and sunny! |
 Stunning huh! |
The rocks have been worn away by the water and tossed rocks |
 Isn't that wear great!?!?!? |
Don, the water, and rocks |
Worn rocks in the sand |
Just on the other side of Crescent Beach; here the wind came in and it was COLD!! Brrrr |
All over NS, they have been creating these little parks; there are historic signs with loads of information on them! |
 Shoreline views |
More rocks and shoreline views |
 See the lighthouse!!? |
 See the "Horsehead" rock?? |
Another dock-front park with historic markers Don is checking out |
 Fire plug hahahahah |
A little town where we found a GREAT used book store that had some amazing old books! |
Across the street was this great statue and beautiful building |
The adjunct to the really big wilderness area; if we had time (like 4 - 5 hours) we would have taken the hiking paths |
They take you down across the bogs, to the shore, and up across the rocks; lots of birds (they say)!! |
A view of the path! |
A porcupine!!!!!!! It was nosing around by the side of the road and we backed up to take this photo of his butt. |
Our second Inn; the Cooper's Inn in Shelburne |
HUGE old building in Shelburne; nearly everything on the dock front was still closed for the season |
The view outside the (only) restaurant we found open for dinner |
What a spectacular sunset on Dock Street |
 Isn't that amazing!? |
The next morning, I took a walk and loved these little pansies |
What the roads looked like most of the time; the deciduous trees had not yet leafed out |
 A big working dock |
Better view of the fishing boats |
Don, a great statue, a neat church made of stones, and some rain |
This was a HOOT; we got out to this beach and it was like a Nor'Easter was blowing in!! |
The wind was, I'm not kidding, like sustained 40 mph with whipping rain; the big rocks on the shore blocked the wind |
So we were able to take a few photos but we couldn't go out on the beach (see the rain on the lens)! |
They had a jiffy john for the beach that was TIED TO THE ROCKS!! |
Don trying not to get too wet in the rain! |
When we got back in the car we were tired from laughing like crazy people!!! |
The Pubnico Windmill Farm behind a great lighthouse |
Isn't that halo great!?!? A very pretty church! |
The churches were really something; very ornate wood on a large scale! |
The B&B we stayed at; it was at the end of a 1.6 mile driveway in the middle of NOWHERE!! |
Very lovely B&B owned by a really really nice couple |
We turned around from that previous picture to take this picture because........... |
..........the house is built at the top of this CLIFF!! |
Don at the edge of the cliff! |
It was, of course, raining as we walked along the cliffs here to see the ocean, but it was still spectacular |
Fiddleheads were coming up everywhere and they were nearly fluorescent!! |
The views on this part of the coast really reminded us of Ireland! |
Beautiful steeple!!!! It was at the top of a hill and overlooked a great view of the ocean |
Very very pretty..........it was locked tho. |
Isn't this GREAT; it looked like stone from a distance but is all wood! |
We took these photos of the outside |
And walked around looking at it from the sides after this |
A plant downstairs trying to escape! |
Then a couple of people went in the church to work and called to us to come in if we wanted to see the inside!! |
They were so friendly!! With the white walls, it was so light filled that even with the rainy skies, it was bright and cheerful |
 Beautiful niches and statues |
Don helps keep us safe |
They turned on all these lights just for us!! |
See how wonderfully light and bright!! |
They were given this scale model years ago; it is used by the renovators to determine the size of the actual structural elements |
 Beautiful statues |
Lots and lots of them!! |
Really quite a wonderful collection! |
And relics!! They have a beautiful little museum in the back with wonderful history of the area and church |
 And more statues |
We stopped for a drink and saw an area thru the window where we could walk |
There was also a chapel here; the door opened and a gentleman came out, saying I come down here every day for 11 a.m. rosary.... |
The whole long beach is made up of these rocks and LOADS of strange trash |
See?? If we were driving, that crate would be in my carport right now!! |
It was, um, raining but we were used to ignoring it at this point!! |
The only carved stone church we saw; it was locked but it was fun to walk around it |
 Quite imposing!! |
This bright yellow lichen grew everywhere |
The cemetery for this church -- impressive! |
 Crunch |
A nearby cemetery; Don turning the car around |
Tiny wildflowers were all over! |
At the closed military base near Annapolis Royal |
They still had the tank and jet outside the old gates; the base is now a commercial and industrial park |
The memorial plaque by the tank and jet |
Don in a restaurant in Annpolis Royal |
Going to visit the library (and police station eek hahahah) |
From Ft Anne -- the view of the basin and river |
Cool hundred year old statue at the fort |
Very old gun at the fort; although the fort was closed for the season you could walk around |
The original storehouse for gunpowder; that 1708 windowframe is original |
The nearby river marshy area had dykes all over it behind which the settlers created fertile fields |
Standing on the ramparts of the fort, you could see how they could easily defend the whole area! |
 Beautiful!! |
THAT is one steep stairs; the previous photo was taken from the top of it |
Smaht Cah -- we saw several of them |
Don next to a fishing boat; it was strapped to the dock and up on a rack because all the water was out (tide!) |
This other boat at the same dock was all wood!! |
The Historic Gardens at Annapolis Royal; very impressive!! |
Of course, this early in the season, little is blooming, but the structure of the garden was wonderful |
It also overlooked the dykes and river |
 Great flower beds |
The volunteers were getting the garden ready to actually open the next weekend (it wasn't open yet, but you could walk thru) |
Fabulous evergreens mixed with bulbs |
It was raining (duh); we watched an osprey dive down, grab handfuls of dead grasses, and carry them up to its nest!! |
More of the garden; lots of ferns popping out of the ground! |
 More gorgeous gardens! |
 Nice nice flower bed! |
The laburnum arbor; later in the season it is lined with hanging yellow flower clusters |
 Nice knot garden! |
Interesting, angular flower beds under the trees! |
Out near Cape Split; amazing |
 Looking the other way |
Up on the Look Off; we saw two eagles flying around almost out at eye level!! |
Down in the valley........lots of vineyards and farms! |
Isn't this great; really muddy looking!! Low tide!! |
And here's a photo of the SAME area about a hundred years ago!! |
At the Grand Pre Vineyard; yummy apple wine!! |
At the Gaspareau Vineyard -- more wine!! |
Okay, we know there is low tide and high tide; we looked at this same area at 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. and it looked EXACTLY THE SAME |
 Eerie ookie mud!! |
I imagine at some point this has water in it, but we didn't see it! |
 Walking along the dykes! |
Isn't that like the moon!!!!!! |
At Evangeline Beach, looking back to Cape Split |
Just saw a few shore birds |
Miles and miles and acres and acres of mud and dykes |
A little church; see the flies inside?? I don't think they open this church until later in the season! |
It seemed to have linoleum that was about 200 years old!! |
No windows in the front!! |
The church at Grand Pre |
 See the flies!?!?!?!??! |
Evangeline statue at the Grand Pre |
I LOVE this photo of Don at Ft. Edward in Windsor |
There were dandilions blooming everywhere! |
And these tiny little wildflowers |
At the Halifax Citadel; they're all crowding around to see the changing of the guard that involved a lot of shouting |
The citadel had just opened; these guys were drilling over and over again the shooting of the cannon that happens at noon daily |
And there were various pipers around the ramparts; GREAT sound!!!!!! |
See where the cannon is pointed hahahahahahahah great view! |
Don at the bottom of a pit!! |
 View from the ramparts |
They referred to this moat as the parade ground |
 Cozy! |
Don in Halifax Harbor; beautiful evening; if a little chilly |
See the full moon coming up!?!?! Wow!! |
We went to the casino and Don won!!! |
The next (last) morning in Halifax; great statue! |
 Big building |
 Another big building |
 What a GREAT facade! |
The oldest church in Halifax; across the street was this phenomenal used book store!! |
What an interesting church; they had a pew all decked out in velvet for the queen! |
 Very pretty windows |
 Memorial doorway |
Turning in the car at the airport |
The view of Nova Scotia from the air; lots and lots of lakes |
Isn't it pretty!??! Easy flight, then a train ride, home again -- as Mr. and Mrs.!! |
