Bam Citadel, and very sad December 26, 2003 earthquake

The Bam citadel (Arg-é Bam, "ارگ بم" in Persian) was the largest adobe building in the world (buildings are made of non-baked clay bricks), located in Bam, a city in the Kerman province of southeastern Iran. It is listed by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage Site "Bam and its Cultural Landscape". This enormous citadel, situated on the famous Silk Road, was built some time before 500 BC and remained in use until 1850 AD.

On December 26, 2003, the Citadel was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake, along with much of the rest of Bam and its environs.

The area of Bam Citadel is approximately 180,000 square meters, and it is surrounded by gigantic walls 6-7 meters high and 1815 meters long.

I learned about Bam on Wikipedia. Sorry to hear about the earthquake damage. Hope it will be restored soon. What a wonderful place. It's amazing. My students and I need to learn more about places like this.

Wow, that's truly ashame. The thing about Bam that intriques me the most is that I don't think I've ever heard of it ...and a place like this is exactly what I travel to see. I've read books on Iran and thought that I knew most of the larger places of architectural and cultural history but not this place. It looks amazing and it is truly ashame.

This is a beautiful and very sad gallery. I remember very well hearing about what happened to Bam. A terrible tragedy for world heritage. I admire your work in chronicling the effects of this disaster. I hope the reconstruction is going as well as can be expected.
