Flew to San Juan & spent night there. In AM, took 75c bus to Old San Juan to see La Forteleza (Governor's Mansion) |
There is a convent & hospital next door. I quickly snapped a picture of a nun checking the garden. |
The bell tower on the convent fascinated me. |
Looking up the street from La Forteleza |
The colors were enchanting. (Lamp on a building near the Forteleza) |
This is Capilla del Cristo (chapel not far from Forteleza) |
A very old tree in nearby Palomas Park - where the pigeons go! |
Statues in a closed park on Princessa, taken from above |
 The Raices (Roots) fountain |
Ruth walking back to the trolley stop on Old San Juan's beautiful blue cobblestones |
In the afternoon, we checked into the Celebrity Summit, Room 6002, our home for a week |
Part of San Juan from the ship at the Pan American Pier |
Our floating hotel. We like another (& smaller) cruise line better, but Celebrity wasn't bad. |
Woke up in St. Croix, USVI & rented a car. We got surprises: I'm a CEO; & at home I drive a Kia Forte. |
We stopped north of the port for a picture. Then we drove north on a very rutted road to find a lighthouse we never found. |
Then we went to the Botanical Gardens, a combination of sugar mill ruins & gardens. This is the Great House. |
I don't know what it is, but it intriqued me. |
Howard got a great shot of these beautiful caterpillars |
Calabash fruit (guess this is REALLY low-hanging fruit!) |
There were bats in the eves of the Overseers House |
On to beautiful Christiansted with its old Danish buildings. Here's Customs House. 7 flags have flown over the island. |
Christiansted reminded me of sherbet! |
Fort Christiansvaern is another mustard yellow Danish building |
Customs House through fort gate |
Howard found this cute little gecko in Christiansted |
View to sea & boardwalk from Scale House. Boardwalk has a great web cam but it was cranky that day, so no posing for Shelby! |
King Christian Hotel from the other end of the Scale House |
Christiansted has a peaceful boardwalk, seaplanes, and a Cay & beach 5 mins. away by water taxi. |
Howard (and I) liked the cannons that were used to decorate Christiansted walkways! |
Back in Frederiksted, I photographed its Customs House & statue of slave who led a successful rebellion. |
Hurricane siren near the port in Frederiksted. Another unusual thing I found: Ruth Island, St. Croix! Hmm! |
Next day, St. Kitts - independent country (with Nevis) with a high literacy rate & education in Caribbean 2nd only to Barbados |
Port & largest town Basseterre (view from ship) |
Went for a tour, 1st visiting Romney Manor, an old sugar/rum plantation |
Pot stills for rum at Romney. (Yes, the Romneys DID own this estate for awhile). |
The botany in the Caribbean astounds me! |
It was a money pit, but a wonderful one. I bought a few things for Shelby, pet/housesitter/friend extraordinaire. |
Brimstone Hill Fortress Nat'l Park, a UNESCO site. I'm not much into forts, but this was a beauty! |
It was a steep trek to the top, where you were rewarded with views of Guadalupe & Montserrat |
Howard (little spec) went down rather than up & got views from the Prince of Wales bastion |
Cannon at Fort George, Brimstone Hill |
Then we headed south. Here's a typical scene on mountainous, volcanic St. Kitts |
The Black Rocks near Mt. Liamuiga |
At Timothy Hill, you can pose overlooking where the Caribbean sea (left) meets the Atlantic (right). Pic by Ashton. |
Mongoose by Howard! At Friar's Beach I took a short swim in the so-so beach. Howard found creatures! |
Ruth got a couple shots of the vervet monkeys at Friar's Beach. |
But Howard got the best! |
 Hungry (and fed) monkeys! |
Eventually it was back to the ship at Basseterre after a wonderful $45 shared tour by Ashton of Royston Tours. |
The Summit has a big butt! |
Music by the 5 O'Clock Somewhere Duo and early dinner from the buffet hit the spot when we got back! |
Dominica - a great adventure! Tried/failed snorkeling in bubbles, swam in gorge & saw waterfalls & hot spring.(Ruins Rock Cafe) |
At 63 I was barely able to do some of that stuff, but this guy helped: Levi Baron of Bumpiing Tours. He was great. |
No pics of snorkeling but here's our group walking through rain forest to Titou Gorge to swim between big boulders. |
After our trip, I found a place to take a quick (bad) picture of another group swimming through the gorge. |
One of two falls at Trafalgar. |
Back in the port town of Roseau, it was the last day of Carnival. Here's a photographer I found in a colorful place. |
A few of the Carnival participants - possibly tourists, I don't know! |
By 3PM, the carnival consisted of only a few large trucks blaring music and some people dressed up for the event. |
I went searching for color, which was more rewarding than watching the rather sedate last day of Carnival. |
Another colorful & interesting building |
And then it was time to leave Dominica, the nature isle, which I photographed from our porthole window. |
Next Grenada, spice land! They export lots of nutmeg, although crop took a beating in 2004. Also chocolate - these are pods! |
We took a $35 AJ Meddy tour with terrific Daniel. 1st stop was Dougaldston estate. Here are cloves drying in various stages. |
Then it was up the coast to Gouyave, site of a nutmeg cooperative. Bags of grade 1 nutmegs were ready to be shipped to Germany. |
Then we visited Grand Etang Natl Forrest & saw, among other things, mona monkeys. |
They were cute, but we didn't have any bananas and they eventually went away. |
These women at Grand Etang would pose for a small contribution. |
The vegetation continued to fascinate me. |
"Have a nice day in Moliniere" say the tires in the colors of Grenada's flag. |
 A rainbow eucalyptus tree - wow! |
Church ruin in Grenada. Hurricane Ivan in 2004 was brutal, wiping out many houses & all tops of churches in St. Georges. |
I was flabbergasted to find the town of "Ruth Howard" on Grenada's map. Wish we could have visited it! |
I loved the Grenada flag with its nutmeg and vibrant colors. |
Back near the port, I & others walked through the Sendall tunnel to get to the rest of the town of St. Georges |
I trudged up to the fort, which had surprises: a lighthouse (which I knew about) & a fitness center (which I didn't). |
And a shoe repair shop where I spoke to the shopkeeper. He told me where to see ladies repairing police uniforms! |
Fort George in St. Georges, view from our porthole |
The next day was "at sea" day - taking it easy, checking out the ship & taking weird photos of the ship (like this reflection!) |
In St. Thomas, I took a local "bus" (safari truck) across the island to the Red Hook ferry (pictured) to nearby St. John. |
Cruz Bay, St. John, is a nice town, and St. John is less developed than St. Thomas. Didn't go to beaches, just walked around. |
A (very) few of its residents/visitors are a little too Jimmy Buffetty, but at least this guy's t-shirt gave me a laugh. |
Howard won a free specialty restaurant dinner for 2 so we enjoyed the trendy food/presentation at QSine. |
Thru our porthole we saw people on the helipad; asked if we could go (yes) & crashed a special German activity. Sehr gut! |
Ach du lieber, das ist mein stateoom (oh dear, that's my stateroom)! |
6:30 AM, San Juan: Time for last porthole pic, breakfast & flying back home! See more Caribbean pics in the next gallery! |
