Docked in Sitka at 10. Russia transferred AK to U.S. here. Russian Bishop's House from 1842 has been nicely preserved |
Short shuttle ride got us downtown. I loved the many islets in the water. Saw Rockwell "lighthouse" (rental property). |
Pioneer Home was built in 1934 for seniors. Like everything else in Sitka, it looks beautiful. |
At noon we went to see some nature with Captain Gary's Adventures (great)! This is Gary's boat Blue Dawg and mate Niko). |
We shared the boat with a nice German couple from our ship. We saw nature, scenery, and people at work (on Memorial Day)! |
We saw some sea lions lounging on a buoy. |
This bull looked like he was enjoying being king of the castle. |
After spending hours watching AEF's DC Eagle webcam, I was thrilled to see a real eagle close up. |
And I was thrilled to get this action shot. |
 Such a beautiful place! |
Gary told us about the amazing amount of boat/marina space in Sitka. |
Saw some kayakers. (Go to next page) |
We saw a number of sea otters wrapped in kelp. They weren't hugely close, but Gary didn't want to disturb them (cropped 200mm). |
 Loved the scenery |
 Loved little Niko! |
On the way back to the harbor, Gary took me close to the non-functioning but pretty Rockwell Lighthouse |
When we got back to the harbor, men were mending nets. I wanted to go to Fortress of the Bear but no way to get there (holiday) |
Howard went back to the ship and I went off to do what I love to do - explore! |
Walked up to Baranof Castle Hill, where Russia transferred AK. Here's St. Michael's Cathedral from there. |
I walked along the waterfront & saw pretty arts school/camp |
Reached Sitka National Historical Park but had little time to check it out. |
Next day was for traveling to/viewing Hubbard Glacier. The morning was gray & misty. We saw this glacier on the way up. |
 Lots of bergy bits! |
Late morning; time to go up top. Next time, if drizzling, take lens hood & 2nd lens cloth, or go to sheltered deck. (Go to pg 3) |
Arrived at face of Hubbard around noon. Were 3/4ths mile away. It was foggy with rain and hard to see the glacier. Sigh. |
Crew members came out on the crew deck to see 13 mile long Hubbard |
Ship turned slowly so everyone inside/out could see/photograph the glacier. An hour later visibility improved - yay! |
It was very quiet, but sometimes you'd hear a boom, and then a splash - calving was taking place! |
Lots of blue stuff in the water |
An occasional patch of sun yielded a few pretty "bergy" pictures |
For short while rain stopped & sun came out. |
Howard's picture of Hubbard - his camera adds more color, but my color is more accurate. |
 Closeup by Howard |
My point and shoot didn't handle this shot well, but I still love my licorice popsicle shot! |
Got better pictures in 2007, but not THIS picture as we departed. Love it. |
Getting farther away - not many bergy bits! (Go to last page.) |
Foggy coastline as we sailed south. |
