Some days are golden: Woke up 6 AM, looked out to see this lighthouse (Grip, 2nd tallest in Norway; keepers lived in tower). |
We docked in Molde near the square Aker Stadium, which seats many more people than the population of Molde |
MOLDE: Took a Viking excursion to see the Atlantic Road. This is Bud (or near Bud) |
The drive to the Road was beautiful. We passed these huge ski jumps. |
Near Bud we stopped at an overlook |
Near Bud: Hard to see even cropped but at least 3 lighthouses and ATNs are in this photo |
 Typical Bud fishing shack |
Way out there near Bud is a "lighthouse" on stilts |
Lighthouse & dreaded waters of coastline of Hustadvika. Gorgeous land to get there. |
After a while I stopped taking pictures of these "lighthouses" (aids to navigation to me) so Howard snapped a picture instead. |
On to the Atlantic Road we went as our Italian guide told us about what we'd see. (Too few guides here; must import them!) |
Storseisundbrua bridge looks to be going off to nowhere |
We had a little time to walk the metal walkway |
Storseisundbrua - 2 cars & tiny aid to navigation, viewed from path near parking lot |
Skinny aid to navigation in Bud area |
Old lighthouse seen from coach approaching Atlantic Road, west side. |
Back home, I identified this lantern-less lighthouse, Bud side of Atlantic Road |
View from Molde Panorama Varden Viewpoint maybe 2 PM |
 By Molde Panorama |
After the Molde Highlights tour Viking offered to drop people off at the Romsdal Open Air Museum in Molde. |
Norwegian kids playing with sea gulls |
Could have waited for a return coach to the ship, but just walked downhill past new modern museum to find the Molde Cathedral |
I loved the spiral staircase inside |
Roses around cathedral weren't blooming yet but I still found roses |
Jazz Man (Molde has a huge jazz festival) |
Molde Cathedral, City Hall & Rose Maiden |
Ferries are everywhere in coastal Norway |
The 2 Molde lighthouses as we departed |
As is common in Norwegian churches, a boat hung from the rafters |
Beautiful day, city, More og Romsdal area & ship |
We were there with Viking Sea, which followed us out of the harbor & then headed a different direction |
People on balconies of the Scandic Hotel watched Star come in and depart |
Next day: GEIRANGERFJORD. I trudged up to Geiranger's church. Pastor was guide for 1 tour, I hear |
 Another shot Geiranger church |
 Inside Geiranger church. |
By a hotel I found and photographed Geiranger's very own waterfall |
 Waterfall was going strong |
Geiranger waterfall: farther down I went, more impressive it was |
Aurora and Star anchored in Geirangerfjord |
I explored Geiranger by the pier. These old buildings by the campground caught my eye. |
Found some grass covered houses around the waterfall walkway |
Star going through the fjord |
After lunch, we took the included Viking tour, which included a stop at Djupvatn Lake, way, way up |
Old houses on way from Ornesvingen to Flydalsjuvet |
Just down from Ornesvingen. Many photos are taken here. |
Waterfall from Ornesvingen (Eagles Bend). Then it was on to Flydalsjuvet. |
Howard visits the big troll! |
Trolls in a gift shop in Geiranger. It's a small town - bank is 25 kms away & only open on Thursdays; doctor only comes Wed. |
Room 3068 afforded good views of tendering operations |
I missed the Viking goodbye party while departing Geiranger - but Howard took pictures |
Viking Star Officers at goodbye party |
Seven Sisters waterfall came about 20 minutes after departing Geiranger |
Believe this is Suitor waterfall on other side of fjord |
Howard photographed 7 Sisters waterfall from deck 8 |
Salmon & seafood cooked to order at World Cafe that evening! These guys were the best. |
Late evening on our way out to sea I looked out the window to see the beautiful Queen Elizabeth passing us |
Fabulous sunset that night around 11. (We are back down to where there ARE actual sunsets.) |
Next & last stop BERGEN! Bergen archipelago around 7:30 AM |
Typical scenery, Bergen archipelago around 8 AM |
Aid to navigation coming into Bergen |
Nordnes peninsula from the ship as we docked at Skoltegrunnskaien South |
A seagull visited the railing of the World Cafe when we docked. |
Went out for a walk: Rosencrantz Tower in Bergenhus near where we docked |
This 3 masted ship near Bergenhus is a training vessel. |
A young woman was working on the ship. |
Bryggen 1st view. I was amused by building covers! Have to admit that's better than looking at scaffolding! |
 Bryggen |
Manhole cover near Fish Market |
Haakon's Hall & Rosencrantz (Bergenhus) from around bend on waterfront |
Star at Skolte quay from Fish Market |
Fish market, Bryggen - typical view. We were told foreigners sell here and Bergen locals sell & buy in a building near by. |
Lunch anyone? "Only" $35-45 - Norway is expensive, especially where tourists go! |
Bryggen from around bend (Strandkaien) with Aquarium boat |
Poked farther out & found funky theater store (somewhere near Torget) |
It took effort to find, but I found & took the little Beffen boat across the water from Nordnes to a place near Bergenhus |
 Wolfish! |
Ate lunch on ship next to big open windows as an occasional cruiser walked by 2 feet from me. It was SUNNY in Bergen that day! |
We love eating outside at World Cafe |
Took a Viking excursion to villa of violinist Ole Bull. This is near where we took a small boat to Lysoen Island |
Ole Bull (child prodigy violinist) owned this beautiful villa on Lysoen Island |
Ole Bull's villa inside was a complete surprise - gorgeous! |
Part of ceiling in Ole Bull concert hall |
 Ole Bull staircase |
Grass covered buildings seen from Bull's villa |
Then we visited the Fantoft stave church |
Never made it up but at least saw the Floibanen entrance in my wandering |
 Stave church, another view |
Xiang menu at Chef's Table last night included this wonderful coconut shrimp appetizer |
Went back out to Bergen Friday night after packing. Love the Dutch inspired architecture in Bergen |
It was an easy walk to the nearby Bergenhus, with few visitors after dinner |
Behind the main buildings of Bryggen I found an old well (I guess) and 2 uneaten tangerines. |
 Haakon's Hall, Bergenhus |
Bryggen behind the front buildings was charming - and it was still light at 10 PM |
From the park at far end of Bergenhus I found Bergen residents relaxing in the shadow of a big cruise ship! |
Looking out over the harbor |
Funky shops and funky wood buildings |
Bryggen 10 PM, behind the restaurants on waterfront |
Found some fast food in Bryggen. Mc Donald's was also nearby, in the city's oldest building. |
Midnight sun 10 PM & Bryggen's wharf and water were rocking. |
A rare sunny Friday in Bergen coming to a close. Emergency response folks were ready! |
 Bryggen was hopping |
Looking up was a good thing to do |
 Oh my |
The old wooden buildings in the back intrigued me |
Unidentified light about 1-1/2 hour post-departure from Molde (Ruth, see notes) |
The next morning we went to Bergen's small airport to fly home. When we flew over Greenland I noticed it was NOT green. |
