We headed up to Mesa Verde in Colorado, 3.5-4 hrs. away. Got gas at Sandia reservation & saw this car from Virginia. |
The day was gray but the scenery north of Sandia was pretty. |
 Red rocks around Jemez |
Mesa country just north of ABQ |
Typical scenery. New Mexico is so beautiful, even if it's just viewed from the interstate. |
We're in the clouds now! |
Big dog & colorful sticker-covered bus around Cuba, where we had late breakfast. |
Route 64/160 took us from NM to AZ to CO in a matter of minutes. Here's the mesa at Chimney Rock in Colorado. |
We went a little out of our way to go to the 4 Corners Monument. Pretty windy there (NM, CO, Ariz, and Utah meet at this spot). |
The monument is silly and touristy but fun. It's the only U.S. place where 4 states come together like this. |
After passing Cortez, CO we came to the boundary of Mesa Verde National Park. Then it was a 40 min. drive to the ruins. |
First view of the Mesa |
We stopped at the beautiful new Visitors Center at the park entrance. |
Statue outside Visitors Center. How in the world did those people make & get to their homes in AD 600? |
3 deer crossed in front of us and stopped close by to check us out. |
Our home for the night was the park's Far View Lodge - rustic but a great location given the distance into the park. |
Far Vew Ruins are close to the lodge. They are small and lightly visited, but I loved Coyote Village - loved the sunset |
The next day we went to see ruins. Cedar Tree Tower was close and cute. |
Spruce Tree House from rocks near the start of the trail |
I walked down to Spruce Tree House. This is far left part. |

Spruce Tree middle with ladder. It started to sleet while I was there. |
 Spruce Tree House again |
Square Tower House, my favorite when I visited many years ago. The metal bars are new, though. |
Cliff Palace from the overview. There are guided tours every half hour so you have to wait for the visitors to clear out. |
Oak Tree House in an alcove viewed from Mesa Top Road. It was built in 1250. |
I was intriqued by this split level house - New Fire House taken from Mesa Top Road |
The wind was whipping up & it had turned cold. Howard explored the Sun Temple & then waited for me. |
Mesa Verde is beautiful in October! We left the park and drove to nearby Cortez. |
Howard's Augusta Military Academy buddy met us, took us to dinner in Dolores, and showed us his home town (Cortez). |
Left the next AM. Passed Ship Rock (sacred to the Navajo) right before sunrise. |
