Flew to Portland on Air Tran, drove to Bath. Here's Doubling Point Light. |
The walkway to Doubling Point |
In Bath, I took a lighthouse cruise to see 10 lighthouses. Here's Doubling Point from the water. |
One of the Kennebec River Range lights. |
 Squirrel Point Light. |
 Perkins Light |
An old lifesaving station converted to an expensive B&B (Phippsburg, ME) |
The fog was getting dense as we came to Pond Island. |
Tiny octagonal Cuckolds lighthouse in the fog. |
Hendricks Head had an unusual building. |
The sun was trying REALLY hard to come out when we got to Burnt Island. |
Part of the Maine Maritime Museum, Bath |
After the cruise, I drove to New Harbor, to revisit Pemaquid Point lighthouse. |
Pemaquid Point, about 8 PM |
 Pemaquid Point |
 Just the reflection |
There were flowers at Pemaquid Point, so I shot a few. |
There are tons of purple flowers in Maine in June. |
The Pemaquid Point Hotel, where I stayed. It's kind of an old fashioned place. Kind of different! |
By the time I left Pemaquid, the sun had come out and it was actually very nice. |
Boats and lilies outside a store on the way to Camden. (In Camden I looked for Curtis Isl light, but no luck - fog!!) |
The Fort Point light in Stockton Springs turned out to be a beautiful one, and there was wonderful sun while I was there! |
 Fort Point building |
Penobscott Narrows Bridge, where you can go up to the top for a look-see. It's a beautiful bridge, and I wish I had gone up. |
 Dice Head, Castine. |
Lupines and a house east of Harrington |
Lupines are everywhere in Maine in June. On Deer Isle, they were even having a Lupine Festival! |
In Acadiia, I was a day too early for a boat lighthouse trip, so I took a plane ride. |
Wasted a bit of money (too much fog for visibility), but at least I got to see Bear Island light off-shore. |
The Somesville museum makes an amazing photo! |
Across from the museum was a great view! |
I went to Bass Harbor lighthouse. This trip, I found the steps going down to the rocks where everyone takes photos. |
Got to get that famous Bass Harbor Lighthouse photo! |
A typical garden in the Acadia region. |
I'm not much of a shopper when I travel, but I DID stop when I saw these buoys for sale in Bass Harbor. |
Bass Harbor Inn, where I stayed. For $65 a night, it was a bargain in expensive coastal Maine. |
I was bound and determined to find Boulder Beach in Acadia. I did, but it was not as special as I had thought... |
Bass Harbor, early the next morning. |
I took a ferry from Bass Harbor to Swans Island, a 40 minute trip. I was one of the few there for the 7 AM trip. |
The Burnt Coat Harbor lighthouse was in bad shape, with the insulation hanging out in the back. It needs restoration BADLY. |
A lobster boat passes one of the buildings at Burnt Coat. |
Near Burnt Coat, I stopped to photograph the lighthouse sculptures in people's yards. |
These buoys really stood out in the Swans Island early morning fog. |
More buoys, and some traps. |
The lighthouse at Prospect Harbor. Howard and I found it when we visited Acadia before, but I wanted to visit it again. |
On the way to Lubec, I saw this lighthouse replica sitting in a pond by the side of the road. |
In Lubec, I stayed for $90 in a converted Coast Guard station. Wonderful! In Stonington, I stayed at Boyce's Motel. |
West Quoddy Head Station, a bed without the breakfast - but there WAS a kitchen next to the bed! |
West Quoddy, located at the eastern-most point in the U.S. |
West Quoddy lighthouse from the parking lot. |
Another view. These photos were taken around 7 or 8 PM. |
I drove through beautiful Campobello Island (Canada) to see the East Quoddy Lighthouse close up. |
During low tide, you can walk across the muck to get to the lighthouse. I did this, and it was quite an adventure! |
You go over a bridge and climb at least two ladders. |
At one point in my walking adventure, I came across a ladder that was about 4 feet off the ground. I had to shimmy up. |
In the parking lot was a man and his dog, watching out for people who made the trek. |
Weir for catching herring near the lighthouse. |
I took Bold Coast Charter Company's tour of Machias Seal Island. Machias is 10 miles off the coast of Maine. |
The U.S. claims the island; so does Canada. Canada posts 2 lighthouse keepers to protect the island and the birds. |
A bunch of puffins just hangin' out. |
Puffins are little guys (about a foot tall) and they come to the island to breed. |
There are 4 photo blinds. At times, you're only 10 feet away from the birds. |
This is a razorbill auk. |
This guy or girl caught a BIG fish to feed its young. |
I suppose this little guy was checking on the nest below. We could not see babies, since the nests are in the rocks below. |
By late morning, the fog had burned off, giving a nice view of the lighthouse. I talked a little to one of the keepers. |
Machias Seal Island was not named "Machias Seal Island" for nothing! Here's an inhabitant, seen from the boat going back. |
Little River Island lighthouse, which can only be viewed from a boat. |
Little river island, as we came back into Cutler around 1:30 PM |
By the time we got back to the harbor, it had cleared up and was looking very pretty. Cutler is a very pretty place. |
Andy Patterson helping people off of the skiff used to get us from his boat to the shore. Bold Coast Charters was first rate. |
 Lupines in Cutler |
The bridge going over to Deer Isle is a pretty one. |
When I got to Deer Isle, I found the Pumpkin Island Lighthouse. Got stuck in a horrendous storm & waited it out in the car. |
 Buoys in Deer Isle. |
A typical scene in pretty Deer Isle. |
Ames Pond and some other ponds were just starting to get covered with pink lilies. |
 More lilies. |
 And more. |
Buoys outside a house near Boyce's Motel in Stonington, at the tip of the island. |
I went back to Pumpkin Island in the morning, when it was clear. |
 Pumpkin Island close up. |
After the big storm, as I was driving down to Stonington, I found this rainbow. |
Not much of a sunset in Stonington because of the storm, but these boats looked really awesome. |
Stonington Harbor around 8 PM after the storm. |
Stonington Harbor the next morning. |
 Quarryman statue |
Traps. After Stonington, I headed to the interstate to drive back to Portland for the flight home. Sigh! |
It looked like the Tin Man, but it turned out to be the Bud Man! This mail box had "Anheuser Busch" stamped on it! |
