Maine for the Puffins - June 2008

Went to Maine to see the puffins at Machias Seal Island, plus previously unvisited lighthouses. Traveled from Portland to Campobello Island and back in five days, seeing 17 new lighthouses, a ton of breeding puffins, and some new places and islands I had not visited before during trips with Howard or by myself. It was muggy, buggy and often foggy, but ALWAYS fun, and I think I took some of my best pictures ever!

There are 4 photo blinds. At times, you're only 10 feet away from the birds.

I suppose this little guy was checking on the nest below. We could not see babies, since the nests are in the rocks below.

By late morning, the fog had burned off, giving a nice view of the lighthouse. I talked a little to one of the keepers.

Machias Seal Island was not named Machias Seal Island for nothing! Here's an inhabitant, seen from the boat going back.

By the time we got back to the harbor, it had cleared up and was looking very pretty. Cutler is a very pretty place.
