Flew to London overnight July 27th on Virgin Atlantic - the baby express! (Little sleep!) |
Lots of screaming babies (Howard got the worst in the bulkhead) but otherwise we loved Virgin. |
Woke up in London, FINALLY got through immigration & found hungry Anne & Cyrus, who took us to Little Venice for breakfast. |
Loved the houseboats (and in a great, lesser known area of London). |
Cyrus took us on a tour of city center - this is the beautiful Albert Memorial |
 And Albert Memorial Hall |
It was Sunday, so we visited Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park |
The London Eye had long waits and a big price, so we only looked at it from the car. |
 Yep, Big Ben! |
A new blue chicken has overtaken the city - that and baby fever, as George was born less than a week from when we got there! |
We appreciated these signs, especially after a night of little sleep! |
 Parliament |
Howard got this shot of Tower Bridge from the back of Cyrus' car. |
Anne doesn't live far from Abbey Road, so we made a visit. |
Ruth crossing Abbey Road - shot from the wrong side, I think, but at least I didn't get run over! |
We loved Anne's flat with outside terrace. Here's Anne & wonderful friend Cyrus, who took us to a great Persian restaurant. |
Took a train to Southampton July 29 to board the ship. Howard's happy to be back on board! |
In Southampton, Ruth spied the old Calshot Spit lightship. |
Southampton provided a great sunset for sailaway |
Day at sea came next - time to explore the ship! |
 More ship |
We got to eat in Toscanna that night - my favorite! I dressed a bit for the occasion. |
 More ship |
After a day at sea, we awoke in So. Queensferry, Scotland, tendered to shore & found a welcoming party! |
I had made an online friend who (pre-cruise) offered us a ride from his home town to Edinburgh. Thanks, Stephen & Sheena! |
In Edinburgh, we took a HOHO bus. This is the Salisbury Crags, left over from volcanic eruption. |
Of course, there are lots of things in Edinburgh to interest readers/writers - here's Robert Burns' house. |
Calton Hill, statue and bird from the HOHO bus |
 The mighty Edinburgh Castle. |
Beautiful Scott Monument from Waverley Bridge. You can climb up but we passed. |
It was a day before the huge "Fringe Festival" started, & the city was positively humming. Here's a busker... |
And some joker decided to decorate David Hume, one of Ed's most famous statesmen! |
Waverley train station, North Bridge & Bank of Scotland |
The pigeons seemed to like the statues, too! |
View of city from Calton Hill |
We ate lunch near Waverley Station |
Stadium erected for the huge Military Tatto celebration which was starting in a couple days |
A few of the street performers we passed |
I'm ashamed to say I don't know what building this is, but I loved it! |
Ah yes, if it's the UK, there will be red phone booths! |
I believe this is the Museum of Scotland |
Not everything is old. Here's the fascinating Scottish Parliament Building. |
Detail - Scottish Parliament Bldg |
 Man's best friend |
Old Calton Cemetery - I think the oldest grave was David Hume's, from 1776 |
 Scary (2 skulls)! |
A couple enjoying the Salisbury Crags |
There was SO much going on in Edinburgh! |
I walked up to Calton Hill while Howard read a book below. Here's the Observatory |
I was not the only person atop Calton Hill! |
 The unfinished National Monument |
 Dugald Stewart |
The Floral Clock - now that is a LOT of flowers, and yes, the clock does work. |
It was getting some maintenance while we were there. |
Stephen picked us up & took us back to So. Queensferry. Here's the mighty "Firth of Forth" bridge (firth is river). |
Inch garvie island with its fort. |
South Queensferry viewed from the tender to shore. |
I walked past Hawes Inn. Here's Marina in the harbor waiting for me to return. |
Stephen's kindness saved us this, but if you want to take a commuter train to Edinburgh, this is the way to go. |
Oil is big in Scotland. |
Away we went, passing some beautiful countryside. |
We passed this castle less than an hour out of So. Queensferry. (Next day we woke up in Invergordon - see next gallery) |
