Got off the ship & immediately went to Creek Street. (Disney ship comes at 11). |
The funicular no longer runs to Fox Lodge but you can catch a shuttle bus up there. |
 Funicular |
Was surprised to see that even though it's quite cold here, rhododendrons bloom in late May, same as in DC. |
 Creek along Creek Street |
Chief Kyan Totem in park near Creek Street. |
Tunnel you can walk through, over or on top of! I took the steps up a little but didn't continue farther. |
Typical Ketchikan houses on the hillside |
 Stickers! |
Disney Wonder and Oceania Regatta on a cold, windy day. Bought a $20 coat at Tongass |
 Eagle statue |
Took silver line bus south to Saxman Totem Park |
The one block long walk up to Saxman was fun. |
The totems there seem to be recently painted. Not sure why this guy has his tongue out. I passed on getting a formal tour. |
It was raining so I didn't stay more than an hour, but it was fun to identify snakes, men, etc. on the poles |
A number of the totems had things way up top. |
Of course, I HAD to take a picture of one of the 2 eagles on poles. |
Saxman Clan House, where the Tlingit ("klink it") people gathered |
If you walk around enough, you can take a picture with multiple poles |
I thought this guy was cute. |
Closeup of the Clan House & its bear theme |
All of the totems were within a two block area; easy to view them. |
Took the silver bus north to Totem Bight. This park, in a rain forest, is more spread out & has a more attractive feel to it. |
Man with a bear hat |
Elaborate totem with eagle, fish and more. |
 Bird with long beak |
It started pouring. My map was in shreds and I was afraid to take more pictures because of the wetness. |
Another beautiful totem. Wish I could read my map to see what the symbols represent, but my map is in tatters. |
I took shelter in the Clan House, which contained 4 totems. |
Saw this big white slug outside. |

 Detail |
Totem Bight had a carver but he wasn't working when I went by. |
 Totems outside carver building |
 Discarded totems? |
Back to the ship for sailaway and our meal at Polo |
 Floatplanes are everywhere |
Airport is on another island; must take ferry! |
When we left Ketchikan, I noticed this steep street - wow! What do people do when it snows/ices up? |
 Guard Island Lighthouse |
Had dinner at Polo that night. |
Woke up next day in Juneau. Cabbed it to AJ dock, where we rented a car. This diagram reminded me of totem poles! |
Drove an old but adequate Lincoln Continental to almost the end of the road - 40 miles - to visit Shrine of St. Thesese |
Had to cross a short causeway. It was in a pretty area west of Juneau maybe 30 miles. |
There was a large crucifix |
And stations of the cross interspersed in a garden. As is usual in Alaska, there were green things everywhere. |
Then we went to Mendenhall Glacier, which is 13 miles long. |
Mendenhall from the road, taken while in the car |
We walked around the shorter trail (Photo Point) to get a better look at the glacier. |
A longer trail goes to Nugget Falls. |
Then we drove back to Juneau & over to Douglas to see the ruins of a huge mine (Treadwell). This is salt H2O pump station. |
Remains on the beach at Savikko Park, Douglas |
Back to the ship: Regatta looks puny between 2 big ships. |
We departed Juneau, with light rain and great scenery |
Goodbye, beautiful Juneau - the only U.S. state capital you can't drive to! |
