Got a little Icelandic money before we left home. Looks like a lot of money but each 1000 krone bill is less than $10. |
Also got a cheap but slightly blemished 50% down jacket from a thrift store. Howard put it in a space bag. |
From Keflavik airport (Icelandair) we rented car & drove up to Gardur (1st Garoskagi lighthouse at cape) |
Other lighthouse with first in background |
Tall lighthouse has folk museum inside but not open yet |
Near lighthouses on Gardur peninsula - allowed to camp anywhere in Iceland |
From road leading to the cape. Had to put on my blue jacket - windy & cool on the cape! |
The Happy Hippie bus was nearby in Gardur |
Weary from overnighting on plane, no make up, usually equals no picture - but hey, I made it to Iceland! |
Drove down the coast to Sandgeroi lighthouse, an odd square one that towers over the harbor |
Kept driving SW to see beautiful Hvalnes church preserved with wood gathered from shore |
At the end of one road there it was: my first orange lighthouse! |
 Charming Stafnes lighthouse |
Icelandic horses greeted me near the little turnaround before Stafnes |
 Beautiful horses |
Ruth was excited to see her first orange lighthouse & her 4th Icelandic lighthouse, all in less than 2 hours |
Driving around the countryside we saw whole fields of wild lupines |
Then we visited the free area of the Blue Lagoon (no time, reservation or $50 for a soak) |
 Blue Lagoon |
 Blue Lagoon |
Blue Lagoon area closest to parking lot |
We then drove to Reykjavik to Ingibjorg's beautiful AirBnB rental hut two blocks from the huge church |
It's a former artist studio with parking, bathroom, studio area, kitchen, artwork on walls, great location & only $130/night |
We immediately made a friend in the backyard |
TV was amusing - had a couple BBC channels and U.S. movies with Icelandic subtitiles |
One minute's walk took me to the side of the mighty church |
Scaffolding or not, it's beautiful - and huge (the mighty Hallgrimskirkja) |
Paid a little bit to go up in the tower (yes, there was an elevator) |
Another view from church tower |
I have wanted to see this church for years |
2 lighthouses at main harbor, Reykjavik. Also saw one out in water, Videy island from shore, Hofdi House, Tjornin & more |
Grotta lighthouse in Seltjarnes, bird-rich peninsula - 11 PM with birds, visitors and still light in the sky |
Another view of Grotta - closest to sunset Iceland could come up with this time of year! |
Art work near Reykjavik harbor |
Typical highway name - difficult language |
Hallgrims from Skolavordustiger Street late at night |
Couldn't stop photographing it, although a nice blue sky and no scaffolding would have made me happier! |
 Back of Hallgrimskirkja |
Next day, we drove the Golden Circle. We stopped for a quick photo outside Reykjavik |
Golden Circle - Howard at Thingvellir National Park |
Had to pay about $2 for bathroom use at Thingvellir. There were bathroom police, too! |
 Farmhouse and church,Thingvellir |
This park is location of 1st democratic parliament (in 930). 2 tectonic plates here move apart slightly each year |
Howard went to gift store & found "Maryland" cookies. We saw them later in Norway also! |
2nd major stop of Golden Circle is the area known as Geysir. (First went way out of way due to Ruth's navigation hiccup.) |
Didn't have to wait long for Strokkur geysir to erupt |
Ruth is loving the colors & flowers (lupines) of Iceland |
On to Gullfoss waterfall (taken from lower parking lot) |
The sturdier tourists walked down to get closer |
We then drove to the upper parking lot. Here's Ruth on top of the world near the Gullfoss gift shop |
Back in Reykjavik, we drove by Harpa Concert Hall |
I walked down to waterfront & found the Soldar Viking ship sculpture |
A large number of Icelanders live in Reykjavik, with many by the water |
 Back of the church |
Didn't see much sun in Reykjavik but loved what little we saw |
Inside the church, we watched an organist play this large organ. Saturday morning to flew to London to board a cruise ship. |
