The atoll is small - only 21 km wide but its lagoon dangers are well marked. For 3rd of 3 times, we were only ship in "port." |
It was a short tender ride to Rotoava. Here, tender passes one of the stone lighthouses. The lighthouses are unusual here! |
When we came ashore, we were given a flower & were greeted by dancers & music. |
One of the drummers had a helper. |
First I walked down a path to find town cemetery & lighthouse on ocean side of atoll. I passed the PO with ATM & sports field |
By the ocean (NOT for swimming or sunning) I found this stone lighthouse |
 Gravesite with multiple cruxifixes |
I walked to the nearby Relais Marama - open air cottages. Read you could rent bikes, but turned out to be only for guests. |
Walked by a huge pile of coconuts plus laundry |
Walked back & walked down only road here. Along the road were people selling things or enjoying a hot morning by the water. |
I passed a coconut seller hacking open coconuts |
In Rotoava I photographed my 1st outrigger canoe |
Walked by the atoll's modest Mormon church |
It was in Fakarava that I started photographing boat hangers |
The Marina anchored off Fakarava |
Pile of colorful buoys behind shop off road. |
Rotoava church on main walking-driving road |
Shell decoration hanging from church rafter |
I always look in churches as they rarely disappoint me. |
Another shell decoration hanging above church door |
Next to the church was fabulous outdoor chapel |
Detail inside chapel - all made with palm fronds, wood etc. |
 Detail of shell decorations |
I heard voices & found there was school going on - at 4 PM! |
 Outside of chapel |
Roof was all fronds, beads, shells |
Coral windchime and palm frond hat outside a house |
Went back out with Howard after lunch. He pointed to this beast coming right at us. |
It turned out to be the weekly supply ship Cobia 3. Trucks & vans were waiting to get food, drink, and other supplies. |
One of two general stores on Fakarava atoll |
From Marina, Howard got great shot of another lighthouse. There has been talk of tearing it down due to closeness to air strip. |
I guess this dog wasn't a stray as he had a collar of sorts |
Someone sold a lot of coconuts today |
