Awoke in Barcelona with a lighthouse visible across the way. |
Stayed a night in Room Mate Anna (fun, different, comfy & inexpensive) |
We loved the toiletries - dental kit for monsters, shaving kit for pirates, etc. |
Fish wallpaper in the halls |
I took a bus up north to Antoni Gaudi's Parc Guell. You walk down to the "Monumental Zone" passing scenery like this. |
This is looking toward the front of the park. |
Casa Trias, 1 of 2 houses in the park |
A mosaic-covered bench in the area of the "Hipostale" |
There are maybe 30 of these columns in the park. |
Building on Carrer d'Olot. This is at south entrance to park. |
 Guard House |
 A lion and a pigeon |
From the terrace - front entrance, benches, with BCN beyond |
 Gingerbread & mosaics |

 Mosaic swirls |
Fierce beast on a building in BCN near the hotel |
Room Mate Anna room had a small balcony. We could see Casa Batllo & Casa Amelier from our tiny balcony. |
At night Batllo changed colors (seen from balcony) |
 Reddish purple was striking |
 And purply purple |
Made a quick visit to Sagrada Familia to check out the progress. Supposedly it will be finished in a few years. |
The Sagrada is dripping! Gaudi saw work on this begin, way before I was born, but it's still not done. (Hit by tram, died.) |
 Sagrada |
There was a lot of new stuff compared to when we saw it before. |
Don't think Gaudi planned to have a McDonalds sign reflecting in Sagrada's windows - sigh! |
Sagrada in all its (somewhat) gaudy Gaudi glory |
New stuff - note white letters spell out Jesus Nazareth in Spanish/Catalan |
 Detail - beautiful! |
Spires have been spiffed up |
We enjoyed walking around our hotel at night - still decorated for Christmas, so very festive |
Passeig de Gracia with Christmas lights. (In Europe, Christmas week ends around Jan. 6 with 3 Kings Day) |
 Casa Mila balconies |
Casa Mila - buy Honesty buy Peace |
Having fun with the balconies |
Charming Batllo & Amattler in day time |
 Scooters & bikes everywhere |
Not a Gaudi building but still interesting |
 So many interesting buildings |
Howard was intrigued by this decoration removal process |
Took the crowded AVE train to Madrid. Ruth lost ticket in Madrid at x-ray machines. Cab driver took us to wrong hotel. Ugh. |
Checked into the wonderful Catalonia Plaza Mayor hotel. |
 Another tiny hotel balcony! |
1st view of Madrid, from train station |
We went for a walk. Walked by the Prado. I photographed the San Jeronimo el Real cathedral near by. |
Caixa Forum British Museum had an awesome wall of vegetation |

Mickey visits Puerta del Sol |
Beware the hot pot. It overboils if you leave it 5 seconds too long! |
A beautiful Palacio we found on our early evening walk |
Taking down the huge Christmas tree at Puerto del Sol |
Walking back from Plaza Mayor |
 Plaza Mayor |
 Plaza Mayor |
Note the bear (Plaza Mayor). |
Nice scenery but train was packed with loud young kids, so not so peaceful inside! (Christmas holiday) |
What the airport looks like when a large plane is about to board |
Cool Rooms - place near our hotel |
The sign over the toilet in our hotel |
Went to check out hotel's free hors d'oevres 5 - 7. This scene was near there. |
We laughed over this store title |
Palacio Santa Cruz. We thought we had found P Mayor, but we had not. |
Homeward bound, Lufthansa offered & we took, an inexpensive upgrade to business class. So nice. Howard slept. |
