Arrived in Burnie, met by sniffing beagle, then Mayor. Shuttled to fun Makers Workshop/Info Center. Out back I spied Regatta. |
Admired art in Makers, looked for penguins in burrows out back, took Crawn Motors' Scenic Surrounds tour. Gorgeous country. |
Tour went to Fern Glade, not sure why. Then went to Guide Falls for view of pretty falls. |
Walked to bottom of falls, where people were enjoying the nice weather |
Enjoyed getting out into the countryside. |
Were taken to Table Cape area. Saw roadkill (wallaby). Were told Aussies leave it there (chain of life). |
Picture's blurred but it will at least give you an idea of the extensive poppy fields in Taz |

Another view of Table Cape |
 Table Cape from fence |
On a wall near our lunch stop, saw cool montages made with tiny photos |
Back in Burnie, bought a pair of pants at the Red Cross thrift, then photographed gulls in a park near the water. |
I told these guys I had nothing to eat - couldn't bring food off the ship, beagle would have busted me! |
Stopped at Hellyers Distillery, an attractive place with food, art & whiskey samples. Creme whiskey was delicious. |
Not sure if this is Mr. Hellyer or not, but I found him attractive. |
 View outside Hellyers Distillery |
Contradictory pair of signs - do we worry about trains or not? |
Melbourne: Backed into Station Pier Jan. 4 soon after bushfires had started to ravage parts of S Australia. Smokey sky today. |
Tug assists Regatta in backing in |
Walked through here many times on 3 different days in 2 cruises. Probably nicest port gate I've seen. |
Walked 5 min. from ship to tram stop Beacon Cove/Port Melbourne 109, bought $14 AUD metro card nearby, took it towards downtown. |
Just over river transferred at Batman Pk to 35, tourist tram. Can take others to go same place (e.g., Federation Square). |
My plans were vague & we ended up in Chinatown (pics by Howard, who always likes a city's Chinatown).) |
Saw typical restos, hotels (including Shark Fin Inn), and a carriage. |
Tram 35 goes to renovated Docklands area, where there are interesting buildings & a big wheel. |
Went back to port. These are range lights near Station Pier from the ship. |
Later on, I headed back out via trams 109 & 96 to see St Kilda & photograph colorful Luna Park. |
 Love the clown face |
Closing soon; didn't pay to go inside, just admired decorations |
Decorations below refurbished Great Scenic Railway of 1912 |
 Awesome! |
Across the street is Palais Theater |
 Luna Park St Kilda |
St Kilda Pier lighthouse. Wind started blowing the sand out to where I was standing - wow! |
Around 7:30 pm while on ship saw Port Phillip Head lights: 1st up was Queenscliff High. |
Queenscliff Low with green slatted Murray Tower & red Hume Tower |
Queenscliff High with Murray Tower. |
Queenscliff High & Low with Murray & Hume towers & unknown structure |
Last in lighthouse parade was Pt Lonsdale. Goodbye Port Phillip bay. Going to Sydney now. |
But the show wasn't over. Local pilot boat had hard time pulling up to Regatta because of swells. Took half an hour. |
Never realized 3 people went out in a local pilot boat to pick up their pilot. |
Finally got next to Regatta & helper went out, hooked to boat, to assist in getting pilot back on board safely. |
Pilot climbed down ladder & hooked himself to rail. Neighbor used to do this work, so very interesting to see it up close. |
Pilot signals OK to Regatta Captain |
Still hooked to rail, local pilot heads inside - challenging job accomplished. |
