So excited to be coming into Algiers |
 Mosques, church, whiteness |
 View from the ship |
Mnarh (lighthouse) de l'Amirante by Howard |
Saw my 1st lighthouse in Africa: Alger Passe Nord |
We were watching people on the military ship & they were watching back! |
City was happy to have tourists. A police escort was provided to clear out the traffic, as our port time was only 10:30 to 6. |
Not sure what it was. Our coach headed off to the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania, maybe an hour away |
Look closely & you'll see people along the highway |
Algeria had a lot of farmland. |
Berber, Arabic and French are 3 major languages spoken in Algeria. |
In town of Tipaza we stopped for mint tea & cookies |
Then we visited the outdoor Tipaza Archaeological Museum - vast area of ruins. |
These women waved to me, and I motioned to my camera to ask if I could take a picture. |
It was Friday, which is the weekend for Algerians, and there were lots of people in the park/museum. |
 Carved art |
Our wonderful guide. Excellent guide and tour. |
We did a lot of walking. |
 The former theater |
In the park our guide sang to us & invited tour members to sing or recite poetry. Someone recited Road Not Taken - perfect! |
Part of an old aqueduct |
A group of young men came to sing to us. Not sure if guide invited them, or Viking, or what. |
Then Ruth spotted the Tipaza lighthouse that I had seen very briefly on the road |
Looking over at where we had been a little while ago. |
Ruth at the park with lighthouse barely visible in back |
 So many ruins |
Back on the coach, we went a short ways to the Royal Mausoleum. There were donkey rides. |
 And camel rides. |
The Royal Mausoleum, which allegedly has Berber King & Queen bodies, but no physical evidence of this. |
The mausoleum was huge. The mid-afternoon sun shining on it was magical. |
Huge traffic jam getting out - weekend crowds, big coach, narrow street! Took forever. |
Police did their best, but we brushed the trees a couple times getting out. |
Back in town, drove by the train station with its pretty artwork. |
I felt so bad for Howard, but at least he got to see Algiers from our balcony. When I got back, his back was a little better. |
As we departed at 6 we saw the huge WW2 Martyrs' Memorial on the hill |
Loved Algiers, and was sorry to leave |
 Telephoto shot of monument |
