Algiers

Spent a day in Algiers. I was excited to go there, and to be in Africa for the first time. Algiers is the capital of Algeria. Berber, Arabic and French are the 3 languages spoken the most. The people at the port were excited to have us visit, and Algiers police provided a police escort to make sure we could navigate through the city and out to the countryside without traffic problems. Howard's back was really painful so he wasn't able to sightsee. But he insisted that I go, so I did. I had paid for an excursion to see the Royal Mausoleum of Tipaza. The excursion turned out to be way more than that - wonderful day out in Algeria.

Back on the coach, we went a short ways to the Royal Mausoleum. There were donkey rides.

The mausoleum was huge. The mid-afternoon sun shining on it was magical.

Huge traffic jam getting out - weekend crowds, big coach, narrow street! Took forever.

Police did their best, but we brushed the trees a couple times getting out.

Back in town, drove by the train station with its pretty artwork.

I felt so bad for Howard, but at least he got to see Algiers from our balcony. When I got back, his back was a little better.
