There was an outgoing little boy in New York who loved cowboys and Indians. |
And a quiet little girl in Maryland who loved nature and books. |
Ruth's father was a Foreign Svc Officer, and the family traveled to Germany on the SS America in 1959 |
The boy cruised, too, and grew up to be a James Dean impersonator..... |
while the girl went to Jr. High and High School in MD and Oklahoma |
The boy's legs grew long and he made trips to California. |
He attended Augusta Military Academy in VA, joined the Navy, and went to college. |
In the Navy, he went to the Phillippines and did the stick dance. |
In 1973 Ruth graduated from college and got her first dog. |
In 1974, Howard had a lot of hair! |
Ruth moved back to the MD/DC area, and sometimes acted a bit goofy. |
And sometimes Howard acted a bit goofy too. |
Ruth started dating Howard (seen with Stoney) while living on MacArthur Boulevard in DC. |
In 1985 fiance Ruth was in Mexico City for the 8.1 earthquake. Phones were dead, but frantic Howard got a ham operator to help. |
They fell in love, bought a house, and moved in with a dog and no lawn in the dead of winter. |
They got married in Rockville |
That started the 23 year adventure together. |
Early on, we decided to travel. |
We celebrated Howard's 40th birthday. |
All the neighborhood kids were kids then... |
Howard was a distributor for Richman Bros. Records, co-owned Big Al's Trading Post, sold phone cards & did consulting. |
Ruth worked at the IRS and (mostly) the United States Mint for 34 years. |
Ruth met the model for the Sacagawea dollar coin. |
We occasionally (but not often!) dressed up. |
Howard sold, and we both listened to, music. |
Sometimes we traveled separately - Ruth to Maine and Florida to photograph birds, and Howard to Las Vegas and L.A.. |
Ruth traveled frequently for work, too - and jumped through hoops to get to her favorite Mint spot (San Francisco) |
We spent many holidays at various Chastka houses. |
We celebrated anniversaries, like Harry and Janet's 60th wedding anniversary |
We celebrated birthdays, too, like Janet's 80th. |
We took cruises - wonderful ocean and river cruises to Europe, Alaska and through the Panama Canal. |
We had big glasses and lots of hair in 1989! |
We adopted a beautiful red siberian husky from the shelter & named him Echo. Echo had a mishap or two... |
We had a big party to celebrate remission of Howard's cancer |
A stork appeared to announce the 6.5 pound thing taken from Howard's body. |
We usually ate Christmas dinner at a Chastka house, but one year we had BBQ shrimp at Pascal Manales, New Orleans |
Ruth made jewelry (paper, glass, silver) while Howard did DIY projects, cooked, and played golf. |
We buried Ruth's father, and later Howard's father, and recently, his mom. |
Although a lot of our interests WEREN'T the same, we DID (D0) share a love of rollercoasters |
Ruth visited and photographed a LOT (250) of lighthouses. |
We got to beautiful Budapest, where, of course, Howard had to do a little shopping! |
Howard went to Augusta Military Academy reunions, and once Ruth, Allie and Joey went, too |
Ruth took pictures - LOTS of pictures. |
We took a hot air balloon ride in Albuquerque. |
Oh, how we loved that balloon ride! |
We visited Neuschwanstein castle in Germany. |
We went to Paris with Al and Pat in the springtime. |
As Marie says, "Some things never change." (Howard sought out duck in Nuremberg) |
We got a beautiful 9 month old shepherd/husky mix... |
and Ruth had fun on the computer. |
We rode on a floatplane in Alaska |
and took a helicopter ride to walk on a glacier. |
We ate Baked Alaska in Alaska |
We spent Christmas Day one year in the Keys grilling steaks! |
We got stuck in Yellowstone/Denver for several extra days after 9/11 because all planes were grounded. |
We adopted sweet Joey, and dressed him up for Halloween. |
Santorini, Greece turned out to be our favorite place. We rented an ATV and drove to gorgeous Oia. |
Joey and Allie kept us amused. |
In January 2008, Ruth retired after 34 plus years of work. She started working part-time as a petsitter. |
As 2010 rapidly approaches, we look forward to many more wonderful years, experiences and friendships. |
