American Snout
Libytheana carinenta
One of the oddest looking of butterflies in North America, the American Snout has prominent elongated mouthparts which give the appearance of the stem of a a dead leaf. With their wings closed they often will hang from a twig giving the appearance of a dead leaf. They are stunning when their wings are open!
The caterpillars feed on several species of hackberry.
