Scorpionfly

Panorpa americana

This strange looking insect is a scorpionfly named for the curved abdomen that ends in what looks like the stinger of a scorpion. This structure is actually the males’ claspers used for mating. They feed on dead insects and will even steal the larder from spiders’ webs.
