Plymouth County, Massachusetts
We visited several bogs while in Massachusetts. This is a bog where the cranberries are floated in order to harvest them. Four-wheelers with rakes are driven through the bog to knock the cranberries off their stems. There are four air-filled chambers in the berries that allow them to float. Workers will come in after they are floated and corral them to the shore where giant vacuums are used to pull them out of the water directly into large trucks on the shore next to the bog. Not all cranberries are grown and floated. Some are grown dry. Those go on to be used as a whole berry in cooking. The wet harvested ones are used in juices.
Ocean Spray is owned by a co-op of over 700 farmers.
