Six-spotted Fishing Spider

Dolomedes triton

So, I was cleaning out the skimmer basket in the filter box of the koi pond when something scooted across my arm so fast that I thought it was a mouse.
It was getting dark out, but, I was able to see where the "mouse" ran to and after turning a light on I discovered this large spider.
It gave me the willies, but, of course, I had to get photos.
The bravest thing I did was place my lens cap next to it to give everyone an idea just how large these spiders are.
And, this is a male which is smaller than the female.
The male's body can be 9-13 mm while the females can reach 17-20 mm.
Legspans can range from 50-75 mm.
I guess I should be happy it was a male instead of a female!

Love your tale! This is a great shot and good to have something else in the image to get an idea of size. I can confirm that the females can be huge!! V

Great story! He's a handsome beast. I discovered one in a bucket in my garage the other day. He was released unharmed. :-)
