Black Bear

Ursus americanus

As we were reading a sign warning of bears frequenting the area Chantal turned around and told me there was a bear right there. I thought she was joking but when I turned around there really was a bear "right there" and these photos are proof that she was indeed telling the truth. As I recall, Chantal did not get any shots of this bear as she made a bee line for the car, something I probably should have done, but, I was too mesmerized having a bear this close to move! It was rooting around the back of a rock pile about 30 feet away.

With his head poking over the rock pile, the distinct element of surprise is palpable. A very fine shot. V
