Polistes dominulus

Provincetown, MA

This paper wasp is native to China and Europe. Apparently it was discovered in Massachusetts in 1980 and since then has spread across the States. It prefers to nest in birdhouses and other enclosed spaces.

We certainly have these wasps here as well ~ inside our birdhouses..... I assume they sting people?

Fantastic shot! This is very common here too, and the birdhouses at the Fletcher Wildlife garden often have nests of this species, as does the garden shed, and under the eaves of the interpretive centre, etc. V
