Golden Orb Weaver spiders are NOT as big as a dinner plate - unless you consider a small saucer a dinner plate. They are non-agressive & harmless to most people - you'd have to try really hard to be bitten and even then it would be just a small pain and irritation at the site of the sting. They are not threatening at all - except to their prey and their 'boyfriends'. They can develop large abdomens during their feeding/breeding season ( 2-3 centimetres across)They are amazing web constructors and produce a chain of wrapped prey, and a phenominal 3 dimensional web - in contrast to the 'standard' flat spider web - in extra strong golden thread. They are not scary and dangerous they are beautiful and fascinating!

I don't care for spiders, but this one is very handsome.
I would have used a telephoto lens to get this picture!
