Hever Castle, Kent: 15 April 2006

The oldest part of the castle dates to 1270 and consisted of the gatehouse and a walled bailey. In the early 1500’s, the Bullen family bought the castle and added a Tudor dwelling within the walls and so it became the childhood home of its most famous inhabitant, Anne Boleyn. It later passed into the ownership of Henry VIII’s fourth wife, Anne of Cleves. From 1557 onwards the Castle was owned by a number of families including the Waldegrave’s, the Humfreys’ and the Meade Waldo’s. Finally, in 1903, William Waldorf Astor restored the Castle, building the ’Tudor Village’ and creating the gardens and lake. http://www.hever-castle.co.uk/

I visited Hever Castle some 3 years ago. How fantastic and beautiful a castle it is. It was wonderful to imagine Henryviii and Anne Boleyn 'walking around' the building. Wonderful gallery but maybe some more could be aded of Henry and Anne? Hever has a wonderful history and can be felt in the atmosphere when walking around. Truly fantastic, an historical English heritage to be proud of!!

I used to fish the upper medway as a young man after the second war. it is my understanding that one of the ironmasters owned Chiddinstone at one time. That was the case at Sherenen at horsemonden where i also used to fish for pike from the estate punt with my dad in what was known as the Furnace lake. I fished a lot in the Penshurst area.
I was born and raised in matfield and went to chool in Brenchley where I won a state scholarship to Tunbridge Wells technical college then in Moson Road. I had my 70th Birthday celebrations this week in Taradale Napier NZ when those organising it put all my young days in the Tunbridge wells area and old photos of me fishing at Penshurst Chiddinstone and Hever up on display. I have been in Nz since 1973 exactly half of my 70 years. good to tap in. Derek Williams
