Perrenial plant of coastal dunes with a branched horizontal rhizome. Colour variable but often purple. (Viola curtisii)

This pansy can have a whole range of colours and shades but is most frequently blueish purple to lilac with a yellow spot in the centre.

The fact that it only lives in sandy coastal dunes (where the sand gets moved around by the wind)makes it easy to recognise as there are not other pansies that loves to grow on such places.
