This orchid is really an unusual plant. Not because its shape or relationship to other species as there are many Agrostophyllum species and several look almost identical to this one. No, it is unusual because of the location where it grows, as all other Agrostophyllum species and their closest relatives occur in Asia. This is the most western occurring species (hence the name occidentale) and lives very far away from its cousins. Sadly we did not see any plants in flower when we where in their habitat but I photographed them nevertheless simply because of their unusual location.
