Imposing structure high on a hill, 24 kms west of Perigeuex. Initially constructed in the 12th century, it underwent improvements continuing into the 18th century, when it was owned by the wealthy Gontau family. It survived the Hundred Years War after the 15th century, and the wars of religion in the 16th century.
Besides having dominant towers and defense positions, it has emerged as almost a village unto itself, with elegant living quarters, kitchens, an ancient bakery, a separate chapel on two levels (the upper, for the lords and ladies; the lower, for the villagers), and other buildings.
