A medium-sized type of “new world” sparrow. Closely related to other North America native sparrows like the Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, and Chipping Sparrow, rather than the House Sparrow (also called the English Sparrow), which was introduced to North America from Europe in the 1850s.
