My grandma Mary Julia Doherty. She was born December 8 1897. She lived on Cruit island. She married Patrick McGee from donegal. Years later came to USA. Do you know mamie? She lives there.

Just out of curiosity I would love to contact my relations originating from Owey. My Grandmother was Bridget Mc Gonagle, her parents were James Mc Gonagle and Annie Mc Geady they are the 1st names on the 1901/1911 census.

My name is Noel Mc Brearty, My grandmother was born in Owey Island in 1872. Her name was Bridget Mc Gonagle, Her parents were James Mc Gonagle and Annie/Nancy Mc Geady. Her brother was known as Paddy mor, her sister Mary was married to Charles Sharkey.I am bound to have relations around that area.

My mother Patricia Mary Connolly ownes the cottage behind The schoolhouse I believe along with the schoolhouse and Another cottage in the hamlet her name is Patricia Mary Connolly My father god bless him passed in 1996 his name was James Brendan finbar o'flaherty wills Connolly we as children me and my Brothers and sisters enjoyed many years of holidays on owey We made good friends of Tom cowen who resided on owey and Old willy who resided as postmaster during late 70's early 80'， Wonderfully remembered times!

My Grandfather was charles mc Devitt he was born in 1908 and lived on owey island He Died in 1978 in letterkenny hospital donegal julia o donnell arranged for his body to be repatriated to us in scotland for burial with his wife in lambhill cemetry glasgow

hello kathleen sharkey im margaret sharkey you are apparently my long lost first cousin. my dad was willy sharkey your fathers younger brother. i heard you are interested in contacting our family, i would like that too.ive often wondered what happened to my uncle charlies family ,i think he had two sons and one daughter. i never met him myself i think he went to America when he was very young i used to hear my dad say. we have a lovely photo of him with his wife and two sons taken many years ago when he was young in America.i have lots more to tell you, if u would like to contact me here is my email:mags.foley@yahoo.com

Lovely to see this site. Owey is the most beautiful Island to visit, and most who visit are respectful of all who toiled there to make a living. Respect to all who made their way to sea, in dangerous waters surrounding the Island.Those who have loved and lost family in the seas always respect it.

I enjoyed the photos. My first time on owey was 1969 when I visited my uncles James and Ned McGonagle my mother's brothers. For the last several years myself and other members of the Doherty family from New Jersey hsve been visiting and fixing up the homestead. it is a far cry from what he became after being abandoned in the 70's. it is becoming the pride of Owey. I have just found this wonderful site and I am absolutely thrilled. I spent many a happy childhood holiday there. My grandparents were Andrew and Ellen McGonagle. Their children were James,Julie(R.I.P),Mary(Mamie),Nuala(My brilliant mum R.I.P),Evelyn(R.I.P)and Neil.My grandad was the postman for the Island.I am also 2nd cousin to Daniel O Donnell and I am also related to the Boyles( I think). I would love to hear from any other Owey Islander.

I have just learnt that my great grandmother came from Owey she was a Gallagher I don;t know much yet but I hope to find out, my uncle went there last year and discovered that the person taking them over on the boat who was Dan Gallagher was a relative as he kept looking at my uncle and eventualy said that he was sorry he was staring but he looked like his uncle Ian, my uncle explained about his grandmother and Dan took him to his Aunt Margaret who was staying in one of the cottages and they had a chat about the family. Amazingly - although I have a really good sense of humour - the fishery protection jpg is a good one - it would never be as good as the time that a whale took residence in the spink - I do find some of these jpg's really quite offensive and I have no recollection of any family named Curry on Owey. Try Boyle, McGinley , Starkey, O Donnell and even Gallagher. Please respond Roger Curry and I will expand and expound as this place is my history - Grandfather - Charles Gallagher - Grandmother - Ellen Gallagher and all my Uncles and Aunts. Try Alec Boyle for size - he went from being a strong young man to being crippled by rheumotoid arthritis on the island and was confined to a cot (much like the one you passed off in what you passed off as a ruin) for the rest of his life tended by Maggie. The Post Office was actually the hub of the universe - stamps could take you outside the small world. I lived in England and in my sad apology for a life - could make cake with everlasting cream. In exchange for the cake my family would send a chicken. I always prayed it was not one I had named but I always had to pray over it and eat it on Christmas Day.
