Hawker Hunter F.58A J-4029

Kleine-Brogel

The Swiss Air Force flew the beautiful Hawker Hunter for more than 35 years. The first examples entered service in 1958 as F.6, but were later modified to F.58- standard. Initial order comprised 100 examples, delivered between 1958 and 1960. Around 1971-73, additional second-hand Hunters were received by the Swiss. All aircraft received same updates and later became F.58A's. Rare duals were known as T.68's. 32 Hunters crashed during the long service period. The accumulated flight hours were over 313,000. Problems with wings structures meant the end of the vulnerable fleet. Last F.58A to retire was J-4001, originally delivered to the RAF on 23 February 1956, before transferring to Switzerland in early 1958.

On this picture you see F.58A J-4029, flying for Patrouille de Suisse at the time. This display team started in 1964 and was a welcome guest during airshows. J-4029 left for Canada and is on display in Trenton at the Royal Canadian Air Force Memorial Museum. Parked outside for a long time, not looking as good as it did during active service.
