Who still remembers the long closed Zweibrücken as home of the 38th TRS? Their RF-4C Phantoms were always welcome visitors. In this case, RF-4C 68-0589/ZR is landing at Volkel, June 1989. From 1991-2012, this recce Phantom was stored at AMARG as FP0664. In 2012 it was reactivated to become a 'drone-to-be', being one of the last to face this death in the skies. The last Phantom to become a drone was 68-0599, also a former 'ZR' RF-4C, in February 2013. From that date, F-16's would become the bate. Remaining stored Phantoms will be scrapped in the years to come. Their airframes are too worn out by the sun and heat, with plenty of fresher parked F-16's available to do the job.
