Libreria Piccolomini

The library was founded in 1495 by Cardinal Francesco Piccolomini (afterwards Pope Pius III) to house the precious books and manuscripts that had belonged to his uncle, Pope Pius II. On the walls the large frescoes, decorated by Pintoricchio in 1503, represent scenes from the life of Pius II (Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini), whose career had been connected with all the great events of the period. All around the library is exhibited a very valuable collection of Choir Books.
