A Surfer Remembered

Morro Bay surfer Bill Barnes died unexpectedly on Labor Day, 2004 doing what he loved...surfing. Friends gathered at his favorite beach on Saturday, September 18 to say farewell to a good friend.

Very nice for a nice guy. I helped Bill sail Motu from San Diego to CAbo in dec 1995. A really good captain with amazing feel for the ocean. He surfed and I dove for lobsters and shot fish for the table. We also painted the bottom of the boat in Ensenada. A truly great experience.

Michelle, thank you for your comment and thank you for reading my book. Four of us! LOL, well that shouldn't surprise me, although at the time I was pretty shocked. :-)
Now in retrospect, yes it was all fun and we were all good people, just doing the best we could. Again, thanks for the comment. I really do appreciate it.

Coming up on another aniversity, Bill has been in my dreams alot lately. Patty Bialak, I bought your book and read it. Enjoyed it very much, especially the chapter on B. Bill was something else, juggling all of us (at least 4 that I know of, and for many years. He was a good guy, smart, caring, and the most beautiful smile, that lite up a room. Still miss him to this day

Bill started showing up in my dreams quite unexpectedly about two months ago, so I decided to look him up during my present visit to MB. I am so shocked and saddened to hear of his death, and that it was so long ago. Still trying to absorb the fact that he's gone. What a good guy he was. Met him when I was 15. Bless you Bill. Though we weren't close following our meeting, I have thought of him more, especially since the dreams started, than he would ever have known. RIP my friend.

Remembering Bill and I was very pleased to come across this site with the pictures. I was very close to Bill and still miss him to this day. Thank you for the picture with me holding the flowers, I have saved it on my computer with the other pics of him. I knew Bill for seven years and there was not a day that we did not see each other, or email each other or talk on the phone. He was a very dear friend and I know his spirit is around me and I will join with him someday again on a wonderful voyage. Patty I would love to read your book when you are finished

I was a very close friend of Bills and didn't find out about his death until
after the memorial as I was away traveling. I wasn't a surfing friend and discovering this site and seeing these pictures all these years later was very touching.
I'm working on a book in which a chapter is devoted to my time with Bill. He led such a solitary life, that I was a little surprised to see so many people come together to remember him. I had forgotten the date he passed and was simply researching that. Thank you for setting up this site.

very nice coverage of the event. I'm always amazed you get such close water shots, even though I know you use your lenses...it usually looks like you are out in the water also, taking pictures.
