Epididymitis

Epididymitis is the inflammation of the epididymis, a tube located at the back of the testicle that stores and transports sperm. This condition often results in pain and swelling in the scrotum and can be caused by bacterial infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like chlamydia and gonorrhea. In some cases, non-sexual infections or injuries can also lead to epididymitis, but with prompt treatment, it can usually be resolved without complications.

The primary causes of epididymitis include STIs, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and physical trauma to the groin area. Certain risk factors, such as being sexually active, having frequent UTIs, or using catheters, can increase the likelihood of developing this condition. Common symptoms include pain and swelling in the testicles, tenderness, fever, and painful urination, and in cases caused by STIs, discharge from the penis may occur.

Although epididymitis can cause significant discomfort, early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics can effectively resolve the condition. Practicing safe sex, managing UTIs, and seeking medical attention when symptoms appear are crucial steps in preventing complications.
