The most prominent fixture on the south side of the main square opposite Parque Francisco Canton in Valladolid is the Catedral de San Gervasio, which is impressive both on the inside and out. The church was built in 1545 but was destroyed and then rebuilt in 1706. This is an excellent example of colonial Spanish churches – big, imposing buildings that doubled as fortresses.
